BERNINI, Gian Lorenzo
(b. 1598, Napoli, d. 1680, Roma)

Self-Portrait as a Mature Man

c. 1635
Oil on canvas, 53 x 43 cm
Galleria Borghese, Rome

In this self-portrait Bernini painted himself with a fiery expression, circa 1635, four years after executing the bust of Scipione Borghese, which is exhibited in the same room of the Borghese Gallery. This portrait is part of a double portrait with Costanza Bonarelli, which was described in Bernini's will as having already been cut in two.
