Ponte Sant'Angelo, Rome

Pope Clement IX commissioned Bernini to decorate Ponte Sant'Angelo, the crucial point on the Via Papalis. The architect planned a group of highly expressive sculptures which appear to float over the waters of the Tiber on the light balustrade that he also designed in impressive opposition to the massive structure of Castel Sant'Angelo.
