This drawing is study for a large composition (destroyed in 1943) for the refectory of the abbey of Montecassino, the Miracle of the Loaves and the Fishes. Originally Francesco Bassano, the elder brother of Leandro, had been commissioned for the painting in 1591, but Leandro took over the project after Francesco committed suicide in 1592.
