Creating a dense dramatic atmosphere, the painter presents a close-up segment of the procession moving from left to right. In it the figures seem to appear to us only for an instant but nevertheless leave a lasting impression engraved in our memory. Christ falls to the ground without any outward sign of suffering. He turns to the weeping women who are spiritualised beings with their elongated proportions anticipating El Greco.
