Gaddi Chapel, Santa Maria Novella, Florence

In 1577 Alessandro Allori painted the frescoes of the cupola of the Gaddi Chapel in Santa Maria Novella.

The chapel was built in 1575-77 by Giovanni Antonio Dosio, a pupil of Michelangelo. Contemporaries recognized in the chapel the first Florentine architecture encrusted with marble and semi-precious stones, in Roman style. The decoration of the stucco vault, the altar, the platform below, the floor and the side tombs, in which two cardinals of the Gaddi family were buried, are attributed also to Dosio.

The altarpiece depicting Raising of the Daughter of Jairus is by Bronzino. It was painted in 1571-72, before the decoration of the chapel was completed, and was moved here only later. The frescoes inserted in the mirrors of the vault and the intrados of the entrance arch are by Alessandro Allori, a pupil of Bronzino, signed and dated 1577. They depict scenes from the life of St Jerome, Virtue and other allegorical figures.
