The PLASMA project is an OECD/NEA international research project to develop and implement a Plant Safety Monitoring and Assessment (PLASMA) system for supporting execution of new symptom based Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs) in VVER reactors. An agreement on participation in this project was reached by Paks NPP Ltd., Hungary, KFKI Atomic Energy Research Institute (KFKI AEKI, Hungary), the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) and Institutt for energiteknikk (IFE), Norway. This research project was proposed by JAERI, and the Science and Technology Agency (STA), Japan offered a voluntary contribution to cover a significant part of the costs required to carry out the project.

The PLASMA system for the Paks NPP has been developed as an integral part of the new plant computer system for Paks NPP. IFE is the operating agent for OECD/NEA in the international research project on the PLASMA system and is responsible for the proper implementation of the PLASMA project towards OECD/NEA and the international steering committee of the project. KFKI AEKI and IFE are together developing and implementing the PLASMA system at the Paks NPP, in cooperation with Paks NPP.

During 2000 the system has been implemented at the full-scope simulator and Unit 1 and Unit 2 of the Paks NPP.

The system provides the following information to the operators:

the current safety status of the plant

on-line monitoring of the critical safety function status trees, and

displaying in a computerised form the EOPs and those parameters which are referenced in the EOPs.
