The Library was founded in 1953. The core of the present library was formed from smaller department libraries whose stock was amalgamated; thus professional unity was established in 1960.
The Library is a research library of national range and limited availability.
The Library functions as the common library of the four KFKI research institutes.
The main task of the Library is to promote research on the KFKI campus by way of meeting demands for specialist literature.

- physics (including theoretical physics, nuclear physics, solid state physics, optics, reactor physics, radiation
protection)
- materials science,
- chemistry,
- mathematics and
- electronics

publications
- 39,484 journal issues
- 40,153 research reports
- Registration: Employees of the institutes on the KFKI campus are automatically registered as members; employees whose work contracts are for a limited time will be registered as members on signing a special agreement.
Library membership is not required for those wishing to use the Library's reading
facilities.
- Reading rooms: The 2 reading rooms offer seating for 32 people. Copying machines and a microfim reader are available.
In the lending room there are three PCs for literature searches of either the library databases or other
sources.
- Lending and interlibrary lending
services:
- Books and journals in the reading room are not available on
loan.
- Other journals can be borrowed for two weeks, books and reports for one
month.
- In the case of interlibrary lending services, documents or copies thereof are obtained from libraries inside and outside of Hungary, expenses are charged to
users.
- Information on literature:
- Handbooks,
- catalogues and
- CDs of publishers and
- on-line databases inside and outside of Hungary are available free of
charge.
- Information on Library Stock:
- Information is available on the basis of our records, catalogues and databases upon inquiry either in person or by phone. Information on lending is based on our stock
records.
- We maintain a card catalogue on books and congress publications and a catalogue in book form on journals and reports. These are at the disposal of our
readers.
- Our computerized databases contain books and congress publications dating back to 1985, and the complete journal stock and reports received since 1991 and all KFKI reports
