Martin Schongauer (c. 1430-1491): The Man of Sorrows

1470-75
Copper engraving, 223 x 157 mm
Albertina, Vienna

An early engraving by Schongauer, made under the influence of Rogier van der Weyden.

This type of devotional picture became popular after the mid-15th century. Its purpose was to help the believer in his devotion by means of contemplation. In this case, the clear and moving representation of Christ's pain aims to help the contemplators in identifying themselves with the Lord's suffering.
