HOLLÓSY, Simon
(1857, Máramarossziget - 1918, Técső)

Peasant Yard with Cart

1912
Oil on canvas, 80 x 100 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

The picture is one of the most important works of Hollósy's period in Técső. It can be placed between Munkácsy's "Dusty Road" and János Tornyai's desert landscapes. Hollósy was interested in arresting atmospheres of a social message, this is why he was drifted so far away from the unrestrained art of the Nagybánya school. His picture is not merely an impression of a Hungarian village, it is in fact the result of observations. "This is an individual version of the painter's realism applying impressionism and divisionism in a broad sense where the objective interpretation of nature is united with a lyric one; realism absorbed much and became a self-contained style," says Lajos Németh.
