Topological defects are found in a broad variety of dynamic physical systems such as anisotropic fluids, colloids, superfluid liquids, quantum systems, or even in cosmology. They bear striking analogies. In liquid crystals, their straightforward optical observability makes disclinations excellent models to study fundamental properties of defect interactions. We employ thin freely suspended smectic-C films, where disclinations can be prepared and released in a controlled way. Mutually repelling topological charges can be observed. The classical models are revisited, they fail to describe the disclination dynamics correctly.
