Although scholarship was always crucial to the Dominicans, meditation was deemed even more important in approaching God. In the paintings representing Dominican saints, the Order's saints stand or kneel in the diverse and distinctive modes of prayer and penance that were practiced by St Dominic and illustrated in one of the Order's earliest devotional manuals, De modo orandi (The Modes of Prayer).
