Psalter of Saint Louis

1260s
Manuscript (Ms. lat. 10525), 210 x 145 mm
Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris

The Psalter of St Louis has 78 full-page miniatures on heavy parchment, narrating biblical events prior to King David, from Cain and Abel to the coronation of Saul. It was intended for the king's own private prayer in the palace chapel, Sainte-Chapelle, built in Paris in 1243-48.

The miniature on folio 10r illustrates the sacrifice of Isaac, one of the most familiar Old Testament scenes of sacrifice. It was regarded as the prefiguration of the sacrificial death of Christ.
