Shrine of St Edward the Confessor

13th century
Manuscript (Ms Ee 359)
University Library, Cambridge

Access to the bodies of saints were made easier by placing them in shrines round which the faithful could file in an orderly manner. - either in a crypt or behind the high altar in cathedrals. The shrine of St Edward the Confessor in the Westminster was constructed in such a way that the worshippers could literally crawl inside and touch the coffin. It is illustrated in the miniature from a 13th-century English manuscript.
