Works of Hugh of St-Victor

1190s
Manuscript (Ms. Laud Misc. 409)
Bodleian Library, Oxford

Hugh of St-Victor, an Augustian who died in 1142, was one of the first masters to teach theology to students in Paris. At this date there was no recognizable university and Hugh's classes took place in his own monastery of St-Victor. This illustration is from a manuscript (folio 3v) of the works of Hugh of St-Victor given to St Albans Abbey in England by William of Trumpington, abbot 1214-35.
