Great Gloss on the Psalms

c. 1180
Manuscript (Ms. 258)
The Schøyen Collection, Oslo

Peter Lombard (French Pierre Lombard, Latin Petrus Lombardus, c. 1100-1160) was a scholastic theologian and bishop of Paris whose Four Books of Sentences (Sententiarum libri IV) was the standard theological text of the Middle Ages. He taught in Paris c. 1134-1158.

This manuscript of Peter Lombard's Great Gloss on the Psalms was probably illuminated in Paris, c. 1200. The Bible text is written in red ink with the commentary in black. In the margins are abbreviated names of the sources, similar to modern footnotes, from which Peter Lombard took his quotations, mainly from Augustine and Cassiodorus.
