Private collection

Zacharias Chrysopolitanus (also known as Zachary of Besançon) was a biblical scholar of the Premonstratensian Order; born at Chrysopolis (Besançon) and died about 1155. He was first headmaster of the Cathedral School at Besançon; then joined the order of the Premonstratensians at the Abbey of Saint Martin in Laon, where he gave himself up to literary pursuits. He published in the 1140s a Gospel-Harmony with a grammatical and etymological explanation of the Greek, Hebrew, and some Latin words found in the text, under the title "Unum ex Quattuor, sive De Concordia Evangelistarum".

This copy of the beautiful manuscript was made about 1175 and belonged to the monastery of Sts Peter and Paul at Abbotsbury in Dorset. The initial on this page (folio 139v) shows the Last Supper.
