St Gregory, the author of this commentary on Ezechiel, is painted on folio 3v as if he is holding the text by stretching it into the historiated initial.
The book was made for St Albans Abbey at the commission of Simon, abbot 1168-83, and the artist, who was probably an itinerant professional brought in from outside, is known now as the 'Simon Master'.
