Portraiture flourished in France during the 18th century. Two artists whose work is transitional make the opening of this period: Hyacinthe Rigaud and Nicolas Largillierre. In addition to these two outstanding portrait painters a few names worth mentioning, among them François de Troy, the father of Jean-François de Troy.
