Lamentation over the Dead Christ

This recently discovered panel focuses attention on the emotional rather than narrative content of the event depicted. The exaggeratedly horizontal format implies that it once formed the centre of a long narrative predella. No other panels from this predella have yet been identified and the altarpiece to which the predella belonged is not known.
