LIPPI, Fra Filippo
(b. 1406, Firenze, d. 1469, Spoleto)

Portrait of a Woman

1440-42
Tempera on wood, 50 x 33 cm
Staatliche Museen, Berlin

The two extant portrait panel by Lippi in New York and Berlin are among the earliest surviving independent portraits in Florentine art. Both portraits feature women as their principal subject. The Berlin portrait displays a single female subject in profile against an open window. This portrait can be associated with the commemoration that accompanied the union of two patrician lineages through marriage.
