JACOPO DA MONTAGNANA
(b. ca. 1445, Montagnana, d. 1499, Padova)

Lamentation of Christ

1480-85
Tempera on canvas, 148 x 110 cm
Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum, Hannover

In the second half of the fifteenth century, Jacopo Parisati da Montagnana was the leading figure of painting in Padua and its surrounds. The crowded composition of the Lamentation in Hanover is one of the most important keys to understanding the master's style. He here interprets the Paduan legacy of Andrea Mantegna in an original manner and with extraordinary vivacity.
