In his last years El Greco produced some of his finest portraits. The portrait of the charismatic friar Hortensio Félix Paravicino demonstrates to the full his capacity to evoke the spirit or the motions of the mind. El Greco brilliantly conveys Paravicino's intelligence, charisma and distinguished ambience. El Greco's ability to transcend the personality of his sitter to give expression to the character reached a peak in his powerful portrait of Jerónimo de Cevallos.
