Study

The picture shows a study to the fresco Marriage of Mary executed in the Cappella Tornabuoni of the Santa Maria Novella in Florence.

The high priest is not yet drawn in this preliminary study. It seems that Ghirlandaio tried drawing Mary in two different positions and then decided in favour of the second version on the left. There are also several studies of the male figure with the raise fist on the sheet.
