CRANACH, Lucas the Elder
(b. 1472, Kronach, d. 1553, Weimar)

Portrait of a Peasant

1510s
Paper, 238 x 168 mm
British Museum, London

Paper was often used in Cranach's workshop as a support for studies and models. The preliminary head study on paper was executed in front of the sitter, recording important physiognomical features in colour. These studies were often produced with a wonderful freedom and at great speed, leaving the clothing only briefly sketched.

It is assumed that an artist in the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder, perhaps Lucas the Younger, copied Lucas the Elder's masterly Head of a Peasant, now in Basel.
