Albizzi family

Moving to Florence (from Arezzo) in the 12th century, the Albizzi soon came to play a consistently weighty part in communal government until their exile after the ciompi revolt. From their return to the city in 1382, under the headship first of Maso, then from his death in 1417 of Rinaldo (1371-1442), the Albizzi became the leaders of an oligarchical régime that in many ways anticipated that of the Medici. Rinaldo was chiefly responsible for Cosimo de' Medici's exile in 1433 and was himself exiled with the rest of his family on Cosimo's return in 1434.
